My Headphones

"My Headphones"
Rose George
Graphite

Drawing my headphones sitting on a desk was one of the first times I had decided to draw something from direct observation rather than a photograph. I found an object that was simple enough for a first direct drawing, but still had some details and a unique shadow.

Dragon Robot of Doom

"Dragon Robot of Doom"
Rose George
Pen
11/2015

I enjoy coming up with characters, and this is one I'm very proud of just because of the incredible detail. I also decided to do some cross hatching for shading. The only non-metal parts of this dragon are the fabric on the wings, and the blue LED light in its eye.

I wanted to provide a closer shot of the Dragon Robot so the detail is more visible.

Blossom Bird

"Blossom Bird"
Rose George
Tempera Paint
12/2015

Blossom Bird was my introduction to pointillism, as well as a project that deepened my understanding of shading and color. Underneath the colors of the piece are complimentary colors, which I let show in very small amounts in order to make the green, brown, and pink pop out more. The most visible out of the complimentary colors is probably the yellow-green behind the pink flowers.

Plaster Strips, Tempera Paint, Acrylic Paint, Tinfoil, Wire, Tape, Yarn, Hot Glue
02/2016

This sculpture was one of my pieces from Art Spectrum, and was my first encounter with plaster. To construct the skeleton I used wire, and wrapped in in tinfoil and tape. Then I covered it in layers of plaster strips. Finally, I painted it and glued yarn on for the hair. Instead of doing a figure standing or running, I took the liberty to have my figure doing something active and unique, so I had it stand on its hands instead of its feet.

I simply drew one of the cutest breeds of dogs. The neck and rest of the body is unfinished so the focus is still on the face and the eyes.

Bedroom Sketch

"Bedroom Sketch"
Rose George
Graphite
04/2016

For this drawing I just picked up my sketchbook, sat in the corner of my bedroom, and drew what I saw. I decided to use darker shades of pencils to make the main objects like the bed, chair, and desk stand out, and then I used lighter shades for things like the blinds, the windowsill with nail polish, and the camera on the desk..

Girl's Best Friend

"Girl's Best Friend"
Rose George
Black Pen, Markers
06/2016

The girl is based off of a pony from the Hasbro show, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." I tend to enjoy personifying animal characters, but I had less experience with animal-human interaction until I drew this piece.

Friend Watching Anime

I caught a friend with their eyes glued to a screen, and took the opportunity to draw their expression. I focused mostly on the softness of her face, and decided to leave the hair unfinished for emphasis on her lips, nose, and eyes.

Overwhelmed

"Overwhelmed"
Rose George
Plaster, Milk
10/2016

Instead of plaster strips, the college-level sculpture class at my school takes plaster to the next level. I started with a half-gallon sized block of pure, hardened plaster, and chiseled away. I created the piece not to copy a human figure, but to create a sculpture about one. I imagined a person curling up into their knees with their arms folded around their head, but some also see a back-bend in the opposite direction. I poured milk over it at the end, so when the liquid evaporated, the proteins left behind gave it a shinier presentation.

Chair in the Living Room

Like the bedroom sketch, as I was watching TV I decided to draw the stillness of a slightly opened box sitting on a cushioned chair that was in my living room.

I drew a couple friends while they were watching TV. It was a good opportunity to draw while they were watching sports because I knew they wouldn't move for another couple hours.

Sword Art Online

"Sword Art Online"
Rose George
Acrylic Paint, Watercolor Paint, Watercolor Pencil
10/2016

This piece is inspired by the anime "Sword Art Online," where people get trapped in a virtual reality. If they die in the video game, the also die in real life. The helmet is like the game controller, and it is supposed to control your nerves so you have all five senses within the virtual world. Acrylic paint represents the real world, and watercolor is the virtual world. The pixels in acrylic convey the connection between the two worlds, and the blood in acrylic symbolizes not only the fact that if you die in the game your real body dies, but also that running into a virtual world can't help you escape the problems you experience in the real world.
